9/11 – The
Hidden Tragedy
The unforgettable
events that unfolded on September 11, 2001 were horribly
tragic, and the loss of life was unimaginable. What many
people may not consider is the ever-increasing death toll
of 9/11, as people who were exposed to dangerously high
levels of asbestos on that day and during the subsequent
cleanup phase surrender to pleural mesothelioma, also known
as asbestos
cancer.
Finished in 1973,
the World Trade Center buildings most likely harbored high
levels of asbestos present in insulation, roofing tiles,
floor and ceiling tiles, and even drywall and plaster. Asbestos
was widely used as an insulator prior to the 1980s, when
the health implications of asbestos were first recognized
and federal usage regulations were put into place. When
the buildings were damaged on 9/11, high levels of this
toxin were released into the air, putting all individuals
present in the area – including employees, firefighters,
first responders, and people that worked nearby – at
great risk of inhalation. If inhaled, the claw-like composition
of the tiny asbestos fibers allow them to cling to the pleural
lining of the lungs for up to fifty years before an afflicted
individual may begin to suffer from common mesothelioma
symptoms, such as difficulty breathing and chronic cough.
Thousands of
New Yorkers were exposed to dangerously high levels of asbestos
as the events of 9/11 unfolded, but the threat of asbestos
exposure did not cease at the end of that fateful day. As
the cleanup and rebuilding phase progressed, firefighters,
cleanup crews, police and volunteers were exposed to asbestos
that was released from rubble and debris. Individuals who
did not wear a protective mask over their nose and mouth
may have inhaled risky amounts of asbestos fibers. In addition,
residents who lived nearby the World Trade Center site,
as well as residents who lived miles away within the city
and in New Jersey may have been exposed to asbestos fibers
that traveled great distances via wind currents. Because
mesothelioma cancer has a latent period of between twenty
and fifty years, it may be impossible to determine how many
innocent people, including children, were exposed to asbestos
and may one day pay with their lives as a result of mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma
is a fatal cancer that affects 2,500 individuals each year.
There is no cure for mesothelioma cancer. Less than 1% of
mesothelioma sufferers survive, and the majority will surrender
to this aggressive disease in less than two years following
their diagnosis.
